Becoming a parent is an achievable dream, live web advice from fertility center experts

So many questions, so many doubts, Talking about fertility to teenagers may seem like a contradiction in terms; instead, it is in the period of life when we least think about having a child that we are likely to engage in behaviors that may reduce our future chances of becoming parents.

“We should be able to find the right channel to stimulate boys to face sexuality and the relationship with their reproductive system in a conscious way. Fertility is not discussed in school, practically never; so the years go by and young couples, often, though with some differences between the female and male sides, discover they have problems only when they start looking for a child. Which always happens later,” says Andrea Borini, chief medical science officer of 9.baby, the network present throughout Italy that helps couples become parents. “Over the years, in our country and beyond, the average age at which one arrives at the first, and often only, childbirth has always grown to permanently exceed 30 years of age; it is delayed in parallel and even more noticeably the moment when one turns to infertility treatment specialists when one encounters obstacles on the road to parenthood: today in Italy we are around 37 years. In fact, this also means reducing the chances of success of a medically assisted procreation (MAP) pathway, which is closely related to the age of those who undertake it.”

“The network – argues Dr. Mara Campitiello, of the Assisted Fertility Center at the Tortorella Treatment Center in Salerno, Italy – can be an important virtual place in which to try to establish initial contact with couples, especially young ones. To encourage discussion with couples seeking information and help, we have chosen to conduct a live online broadcast, using the web, the most appropriate channel for communicating with young people, hoping that it is precisely the younger couples who will follow us in the April 10. A moment of discussion between couples and experts, an opportunity to be able to ask your questions and doubts in the quiet of your own home, in complete privacy. Among the topics we will discuss, there will definitely be heterologous fertilization, a very hot topic at this time given the inclusion of treatments of this type in the so-called New LEAs.”

After 15 years, in fact, the Essential Levels of Care, in which the services that must be mandatorily provided to all citizens are specified, have been modified and updated. The measure has just been published in the Official Gazette and the process is underway that should lead to their applicability.

“In fact – points out Dr. Fulvio Cappiello, of the Mediterraea Assisted Fertilization Center in Naples – we are waiting for the new Lea implementation regulations to be drawn up, which will make it possible to define the conditions for reimbursement of services, the maximum age of the woman, the number of possible attempts, as well as, of course, the rates applied to each type of treatment. This is potentially a real revolution especially for those who, like our co-religionists, have always been obliged to engage in procreative tourism in order to fulfill their wishes.”.

For these couples, who are facing all the emotional as well as physical difficulties of the path of searching for a child who does not arrive, it would be really important to arrive soon to contain the direct and indirect economic costs that this journey brings.

“Awaiting the effective entry into force of the new LEAs, explains Dr. Borini, April 10 at 7 p.m.30, the webinar will be an opportunity to delve into the continuous evolutions in reproductive medicine; new technologies and advances in research in the field allow us to improve every day what the extensive case history we have faced in our years of activity already allows us to do: to stand by the side of couples to help them realize their dream, without being intimidated by the difficulties, to hold their baby in their arms.”
